Button up! It's Collar time!

Fashion trends are pretty retro-inspired these years. And I love it.
I'm always attracted to fashion around 1930s to 1950s; 40s Hollywood glamour & 50s femininity.
But this coming fall, the retro-inspired trend has a new element: androgynous.
Crisp white shirts (my fav!), oversize sweaters, tailored blazers...
borrowed-from-the-boys items found their way into our wardrobes.

My favorite borrowed-from-the-boys piece is shirts. (And a satchel)
And something I would never wear for this trend is loafers. I just cant picture myself looking good in those...

Several androgynous looks from the Zara Lookbook August 2011:
Love this outfit, see the details on the collar?
Androgynous trend doesn't mean that we should all go for tomboy looks,
being ladylike even in androgynous items is what we should be aiming at.
I know that it's Coco Chanel who gave menswear a twist and made it chic to wear.
But my inspiration are definitely girly-er icons like Alexa Chung.
Love this girl. (who wouldn't?)

A simple way to embrace the trend without losing femininity: Collars.
Collar tops or collar-shaped necklaces.
Peter pan collars are everywhere starting from spring & are definitely going to stay right through fall & winter.

Lovebirds

Lovebirds, literally
Girl, have I told you how wonderful it is to see you madly in love?

Seeing your best friend being so madly in love, with someone nice & treats her the way she deserves, is absolutely a wonderful thing.

Things I learnt from you two:
1) Love can sneak up on you at anytime, anywhere.

2) Go with your intuition.
3) No one should cling onto an unhealthy, unsatisfactory relationship.
4) You deserve better, or at least what you want. (I sound like a feminist in this...)
The right one treats you right while being himself. I wholeheartedly believe that a person can get what he/she wants as long as he/she wants it enough.
From HappyThings
5) You don't need grandiose expressions to show love. Love is best expressed in simple ways.

Boy, treat my baby right. She's the sweetest girl I've ever met.

Expo de Rue

When I say 'the city is the best gallery one could imagine', what is the first thing that comes to your mind?
Graffiti, maybe?
French street artist JR

French artist JR moved on from graffiti to way bigger street art projects.
By bigger, I mean both size and scale.

His fabulous street art projects started with him finding an old camera in the Paris subway.
He started taking portraits of people, ordinary people like you and me, and printing the portraits into big posters.
Then pasting these huge posters on walls in the community. Illegally, sometimes.
The city is his canvas.

That is just a very brief summary of what he does.
But what he does is more than that. His projects are truly amazing.
A reason why the projects are amazing is that JR does not try too hard to spread his messages.
Yes, the portraits are big enough as statements.
But what I mean is that, by not explaining, he spreads the messages because of people's curiosity.

When he and his team were posting white paper on walls in India, locals don't know what they were doing.
They asked questions.

When the Face2Face project, the biggest illegal exhibition ever, have portraits of Palestinians and Israelis of similar backgrounds like occupation side by side, he left people thinking.
He asked, 'can you tell who is a Palestinian and who an Israeli?'
For your information, people couldn't tell the difference most of the time.

His Women are Heroes project was launched in many different countries in the world.
In places where conflicts are frequent, women are usually the first targeted victims.
His project reminds people the fact that women are heroes and pillars to the community, even when most of the time they are unseen.
Such a simple but great way to empower these women and make their stories heard, worldwide.
It is truly a beautiful thing to see men participating in the project to pay tribute to women.

How fun! One of my favourites.
Earlier this year, in March, JR became the winner of the TED Prize 2011.
He launched his latest project Inside Out on the same day he made his TED Prize wish.
His TED Prize wish is to use art to change the world, inside out.
Now, you can send portraits to JR & his team via email, tell them your story and what you stand for.
In return, they will send you back the poster for you to post in public.

Wrinkles of the City--Shanghai
Another great work.
I have been telling people about JR & his projects, people ask me if I think his projects can really change the world.
Saying that posting portraits alone can change the world might be too ambitious.
But his projects are making statements and sending powerful messages, of all sorts. That's for sure.
Inspiring and motivating? Yes.
A beautiful way to celebrate humanity? (in terms of both art and the meaning it carries) Yes.

In the official video of the Inside Out project, a Tunisian boy who participated was interviewed.
He shared what the project means to him and what he said moved me.
He described the essence of the projects,

'It's not the same face but it's the same people.'

People, read about the works of JR & his team. Support them!
If their work doesn't make you smile, feeling more hopeful & motivated for a better world, I don't know what else does.

Fred & Ginger

Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers.
They are legends.
I seriously think that every ballroom dancer should know these two dancers.
Yes, they do Broadway musicals mainly, with ballroom dances, some swings and some taps.
I have always adored and admired their grace, charm, manners, wits and that glamorous aura they have.
Their dances are just smooth and effortless. And of course, timeless.
And that's exactly the charm of ballroom dancing: grace, manners, wits and glamour.
It's true that today's ballroom dancing have more 'tricks' to make it more pleasurable to watch, and of course competitive dancing/ dancesport makes it inevitable for these tricks to get into the syllabus.
Now, very few have the grace Fred and Ginger did.

Throughout his career on musical films, Fred had worked with other dancers.
He first danced with his own sister, Adele Astaire.
It's such a pity that Adele Astaire was not not very well-known. Probably because she left the entertainment business at the peak of her career to be married. Fred danced with Adele since he was 6.
And, Fred & Adele accompanied by George Gershwin himself on the piano is a priceless classic.

Others that Fred had worked with include the famous Audrey Hepburn in Funny Face, Rita Hayworth and many more.

But among all dancers he had worked with, he is best remembered with Ginger Rogers.
I have always believed that they are the perfect match.
Not Fred with Audrey, not Fred with Rita.
Just Fred and Ginger.
To put it simply, they looked good together. Just perfect.
Fred in top hat and tails and Ginger in the most gorgeous gowns.
Their light-footed steps, flawless turns, struts and runs.
Watching them dance and sing is a pure pleasure and delight.

Another important thing I looked upon to them is their grace and manners.
How I wish people can talk and act with such etiquette.
No, they're not old-fashioned. (Or maybe it's me who is old-fashioned.)
It's called good manners.

People who love to dance have always been saying, 'Michael Jackson inspires me.'
Upon writing this post, I did a little research and was surprised to find out that Fred Astaire influenced Michael in terms of dancing.
Random fact: Micheal Jackson dedicated his biography to him.

Favourite quotes by Fred Astaire.
"I have no desire to prove anything by dancing. I have never used it as an outlet or a means of expressing myself.I just dance. I just put my feet in the air and move them around."

"The hardest job kids face today is learning good manners without seeing any."

Favourite quote by Ginger Rogers:
" The most important thing in anyone's life is to be giving something. The quality I can give is fun, joy and happiness. This is my gift."

Oh I wish I could be born in their times & live straight through to the best eras of Jazz as well.
Oh I miss dancing.

Love,
N
